What's Wrong in Gambling? There are forms of gambling that are legal in some countries while in others, are not. Illegal gambling is a crime and is punishable by law. In Colorado, internet gambling is illegal; in many places like Hawaii, cockfighting is prohibited because of its cruelty to animals. Illegal gambling is greatly associated with organized crime. Some illegal gambling is operated and ran by mobs. What is the nature of gambling? Is gambling really a sin that is why it is banned in so many countries? In countries with large Catholic population, gambling is viewed as sinful. Gambling is bad because it is illegal. If we legalize gambling, does that mean that it's not bad anymore? Illegal gambling has large profits, but does not pay taxes. Lotteries are not illegal because they pay taxes, and casinos as well. However, it makes one think, then why not impose taxation on more gambling games. In that way, the government will profit more and there would be lesser crimes. If you legalize more gambling games, of course there should be policies and standards that need to be followed. In that way, the mobs would not rule anymore in the gambling world because they do not work well inside laws. At present, the world is experiencing lack of policies and guidelines on gambling, that's why many people are getting away with illegal gambling. The problem, therefore, does not lie with the gambling per se, but on the legislation. The laws prohibit gambling on the grounds of the problems and crimes it brings. However, we must not forget people who gamble responsibly, who gamble just to have fun. Not all gamblers are problem gamblers, they are just a little fraction of the whole population of gamblers. So why make everybody suffer for the wrongdoings of the few? It is hasty to generalize all gamblers to be problem gamblers. It is not in the nature of all gamblers to live a life of crime, but instead, it is in the nature of those who are weak, and ill-disciplined. That's why laws are created. To set limits for people like these. It's high time that people accept the reality that gamblers will engage in gambling, legal or illegal. So instead of trying to discriminate and put everyone in jail, why not profit from the gamblers' nature and improve the legislations. Make them pay taxes. In that way, more will benefit from the money of the few. |
